Municipal Publications

The Municipality of Mykonos has produced publications with diverse content (historical, folklore, literary, artistic, etc.), all of which have a common goal to contribute to the promotion and preservation of Mykonos’ history and cultural heritage. The publishing activity of the Municipality began in 1986 and continues to this day.

1986

Following a proposal by Panagiotis Kousathanas, the first edition of ‘Orts’ ala banda! A Retrospective Journey through Old Mykonos’ was published under his supervision. (The 2nd edition was published in 2002 and the 3rd edition in 2024). The publishing effort continued in 1991 with the photographic journey ‘Delos, Spring of 1991 AD’ edited by Panagiotis Kousathanas and Vangelis Pelekis.

1997

The first volume of the Historical Dictionary of the Mykonian Dialect by Stavros Manesis was published, the first attempt to record the Mykonian dialect, which was completed with the second volume in 2001. The first volume was reprinted in 2022.

2018

The 4th volume of ‘Paramilites’ (texts on the history and culture of Mykonos) is published by the Municipality of Mykonos and Indiktos Publications, followed by the 7th volume in 2019, the 6th and 3rd in 2020, the 5th in 2021, and finally the 8th in 2022. The first two volumes were published by Indiktos Publications.

With the publication of the 8th volume (‘Thematic Bibliographic Guide for Mykonos’) by the Mykonian author Panagiotis Kousathanas in 2023, a richly illustrated volume with rare and timeless photographic material from Mykonos, the eight-volume series of ‘Paramilites’ was editorially completed.

The eight-volume collection of ‘Paramilites’ by Panagiotis Kousathanas is the product of years of research and effort, a unique (not only for Mykonos) literary achievement, a work that constitutes in its entirety an unforgettable intellectual adventure into the unknown Culture and History of the much-praised and equally maligned Mykonos. A ‘initiatory’ journey into known and unknown information about the place, written and commented on in an engaging way for the psyche-guidance and enlightenment of the ‘forgetful of its history’ inhabitant of the island, but also for the guidance of the future researcher of Mykonos’ History.

The 4,500 pages of the eight volumes contain the history and culture of the island and its inhabitants from prehistoric times to the present day. The variety of historical, cultural, folklore, linguistic, literary, combative, bibliographic, and even anecdotal topics in the eight-volume collection draw us into a fascinating read on the Culture and History of Mykonos from its mythological years to today.

The last six volumes of this long-term writing feat became an editorial reality within five years from 2018 to 2023 thanks to the Municipality of Mykonos and Indiktos Publications.

The work serves as a compass and heritage for current and future Mykonians and researchers of the culture and history of the

island to be able to continue and complement our knowledge with future new research and studies.

They are available in bookstores in Mykonos, in central bookstores in Athens, and at the P.K. Library.
