Municipal Library

Municipal Library

The Library of Mykonos Municipality was founded in August 1957 with the initiative and donation of our fellow citizen, Mr. Ioannis Alexandrou Meletopoulos, former Curator of the Historical and Ethnological Museum of Athens.

Until May 1972, it was housed in the Mykonos Town Hall. Due to renovations, it was moved to the Inglesi residence (property of Mykonos Municipality from the bequest of Eirini Inglesi, in memory of her husband and our great poet Ioannis Gryparis). Shortly after, it was transferred to a privately-owned building provided by its founder, Mr. Ioannis Alex. Meletopoulos, where it remains housed to this day.

The Library serves the island’s community, consisting of students, residents of all ages, and generally all those who turn to the Library to benefit from its services. The responsibility for the Library’s operation lies with the Municipality of Mykonos in collaboration with the current librarian.

The Library’s goal is to promote knowledge, study, and research, as well as to create an intellectual center where every permanent resident or passing visitor, scientist or tourist, can find information about our island or the Cyclades in general, without excluding other Greek and global topics. Although small, the library space is attractive, impressive, and pleasant at the same time.

So far, 11,500 volumes of books have been recorded, forming the Closed and General Collections of the library’s books in various sections such as History, Greek, Children’s and Foreign Literature, Theater, Poetry, Archaeology, Art, Ancient Greek Literature, books related to Mykonos and the Cyclades, rare books, and more. There are small collections in English and French languages.

The majority of the library’s material comes from the donation of Mr. Ioannis Meletopoulos, as well as from donations by organizations and individuals, friends of Mykonos and the Municipal Library.

It also has a large collection of old reference material, consisting of encyclopedias and dictionaries. The most important section is the Historical Archive of Mykonos, which is co-located in the Library’s space where the first phase of its classification into folders was recently completed. It includes documents and manuscripts from previous centuries related to the history of the island and the Cyclades. Also, rare and valuable editions and photographs.

Of great interest are the documents with the correspondence of our heroine of 1821, Manto Mavrogenous. This section is closed to the public, except for study and research on documents related to the island’s history. Anything concerning the documents on Manto’s correspondence is part of the Meletopoulos donation.

The Library also possesses a unique collection of Cycladic coins, a collection of Cycladic seals, old engravings, and maps.

The Library is in the final stage of electronically recording its material.

The Library is a lending library, but to have the right to use its services, one must be characterized as a member by registering with the Library. All library members can borrow up to two book titles for 10 days, with the possibility of renewal for another 10 days.

Since January 2005 (and after the death of the first and only librarian, Mrs. Kalliopi Triantafyllou), the Library has been operating with Mrs. Vasiliki Nikiforidou as the librarian.

Upon arrangement with the Library staff, visits by students from Mykonos schools, book presentations, etc., can be organized.
