Historical Background
The Former Club
A football team from Mykonos was previously mentioned under a similar name, “A.O. Mykonos,” and participated in the Third Division of the Piraeus Football Clubs Association (E.P.S. Piraeus) during the 1970–71 season. The earliest record dates to September 27, 1970, when it hosted a friendly match against the team “A.S. Protefs Chalkidonos Nikaia,” which ended in a 2–2 draw:
“Protefs drew 2–2 with A.O. Mykonos… Protefs thanks the Board of Directors of A.O. Mykonos for the reception and hospitality.”
Subsequently, it became a member of the Piraeus Football Clubs Association (E.P.S. Piraeus) in November 1970:
“The following clubs are notified to submit their documentation to the E.P.S.P. within ten days for registration: Aetos Korydallou, A.O. Mykonos, …”[2] Initially, a club named “Apollon Mykonou” was mentioned as a candidate for entry into the Third Division of E.P.S.P., “provided it is legalized by the General Secretariat of Sports and its stadium is renovated,” but ultimately, A.O. Mykonos was admitted.
The club did not have a suitable stadium, but in order to participate in the championship, it agreed to play all its matches away during the first round:
“The administration of the club ‘Mykonos’ acknowledges that it accepts to play all the fixtures of the first round of the Third Amateur Championship away from home, and provided that the Mykonos stadium is prepared in time, it will play its home matches throughout the entire second round.”
Ultimately, the club played its home matches in Syros and finished in 9th and last place in Group A with 20 points (15 goals scored, 30 conceded), along with three forfeits. The initial squad included players such as Gryparis, Grigoriadis, Katsamoras, Karidopoulos, Marogiannis, Ganotis, Papoutsas, Zouganelis I and II, Tsogkos, and Karydas. In the following season (1971–72), the club did not participate in the championship and forfeited all its matches. As a result, in July 1972, it was removed from the E.P.S. Piraeus registry. In the years that followed, there are no official records of the club’s activity.
The New Club
The new A.O. Mykonos (football department) was re-established in 1981 and has participated since the 1981–82 season in the competitions of the newly formed Cyclades Football Clubs Association (E.P.S. Cyclades), playing a leading role. The club has won the Cyclades championship six times and the Cyclades cup eight times, including five consecutive wins. It has competed for many seasons in the Delta Ethniki (Fourth National Division), from which it was relegated in the 2011–12 season. In 2013, it won the Cyclades championship again and subsequently earned promotion to the Gamma Ethniki (Third National Division) through a special playoff. Thus, in the 2013–14 season, the club competed for the first time in the third tier, from which it was relegated back to the E.P.S. Cyclades league.
In the summer of 2020, the administrations of Ano Mera and A.O. Mykonos decided to merge the two clubs with the goal of creating a more competitive team on the island that would maintain its position in the higher national divisions. The new club, named A.E. Mykonos, took Ano Mera’s place in the Gamma Ethniki (Third National Division), while a second team (A.E. Mykonos B) was formed to take A.O. Mykonos’s place in the local championship.
