Municipal Music School “Georgios Axiotis”
Municipal Music School
Historical Overview
The Municipal Music School “Georgios Axiotis” was founded in 1990 (Government Gazette 558, 31/05/1990). The idea for its establishment was conceived by the late Mr. Petros Tolis, who served for many years as the School’s President. With the support of his friend, then-Mayor Mr. Mathios Apostolou, they turned the idea into reality. The School’s mission was to promote and enhance the cultural spirit and educational level of the island by providing musical education to the residents of Mykonos.
The first Artistic Director was Dimitris Lagios, who served from 1985 to 1990. From 1990 to 2012, the role was held by Maestro Kostis Konstantaras. Since 2012, the Artistic Direction of the Music School has been voluntarily undertaken by guitar professor Mr. Babis Amoiridis.
Courses offered over the years have included piano, guitar, violin, bouzouki, tzouras, baglamas, vocal training, percussion, wind and brass instruments (for the Philharmonic), music theory, and more. Throughout the academic year, seminars are also conducted by distinguished performers and composers.
Under the supervision of the Municipal Music School are the “Mykonos Choir” and the “Children’s Choir,” which perform at events and concerts both in Greece and abroad. These choirs have collaborated with Greek and international artists and ensembles. Sections of the Music School also participate in activities promoting social responsibility, such as benefit concerts for collecting clothing, food, medicine, and other supplies for vulnerable groups. Additionally, they organize events for children in the island’s municipal nurseries, bringing them closer to the art of music.
Starting from the 2024–2025 academic year, the Municipal Philharmonic Band resumed its activities, under the direction of conductor Mr. Kostas Ioannidis, assisted by Ms. Evridiki Manolitsi and a team of exceptional musician-educators.
Its aim is to strengthen the island’s cultural development, to introduce young people to Philharmonic instruments, and to gradually form a band that will accompany national and religious celebrations, anniversaries, and all official events of the Municipality.
