Municipal Library

Municipal Library

The Library of the Municipality of Mykonos was founded in August 1957 through the initiative and generous donation of our fellow citizen, Mr. Ioannis Alexandrou Meletopoulos, former Curator of the Historical and Ethnological Museum of Athens.

Until May 1972, it was housed in the Mykonos Town Hall. Due to renovations, it was moved to the Inglesi residence (property of the Municipality of Mykonos from the bequest of Eirini Inglesi). Shortly after, it was transferred to a privately-owned building donated by its founder, Mr. Ioannis Alex. Meletopoulos, where it remains to this day.

The Library serves the island community, which consists of students, residents of all ages, and generally anyone who turns to the Library to benefit from its services. The Municipality of Mykonos is responsible for its operation in collaboration with the appointed librarian.

The Library’s goal is to promote knowledge, study, and research, as well as to create an intellectual center where every permanent resident or visitor—whether scientist or tourist—can find information about our island or the Cyclades in general, without excluding other Greek or international topics. The Library space, although small, is at once attractive, impressive, and pleasant.

To date, 11,500 book volumes have been recorded, forming the Library’s Closed and General Collections, which cover various sections such as History, Greek, Children’s and Foreign Literature, Theater, Poetry, Archaeology, Art, Ancient Greek Literature, books related to Mykonos and the Cyclades, rare books, and more. There are also small collections in English and French.

The majority of the Library’s material comes from the donation of Mr. Ioannis Meletopoulos, as well as from donations by organizations and individuals—friends of Mykonos and the Municipal Library.

The Library also holds a large collection of old reference materials, including encyclopedias and dictionaries. Its most important section is the Historical Archive of Mykonos, housed in the same space, where the first phase of folder-based classification was recently completed. The archive includes documents and manuscripts from previous centuries related to the history of the island and the Cyclades, as well as rare and valuable editions and photographs.

Of great interest are the documents containing the correspondence of our 1821 heroine, Manto Mavrogenous. This section is closed to the public and accessible only for study and research concerning the island’s history. All documents related to Manto’s correspondence are part of the Meletopoulos donation.

The Library also possesses a unique collection of Cycladic coins, Cycladic seals, old engravings, and maps.

It is currently in the final stage of digitizing its material.

The Library is a lending library, but to access its services, one must first register as a member. All registered members may borrow up to two books for 10 days, with the possibility of a 10-day renewal.

Since January 2005 (following the death of the Library’s first and only librarian, Mrs. Kalliopi Triantafyllou), the Library has been operating with Mrs. Vasiliki Nikiforidou as its librarian.

By arrangement with the Library staff, student visits from Mykonos schools, book presentations, and other events may be organized.
